IRI inaugurated with the discussion forum on value-creating government

October 30, 2009. CEU Business School‘s Initiative for Regulatory Innovation was inaugurated with the discussion forum of the prominent representatives of the private and public sector. The forum, titled “Value-Creating Government: A Challenge or Opportunity?,” gathered, among others: Waldemar Pawlak, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Peter Maksin, State Secretary in the Office of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Marek Kloczko, Secretary General of the Polish Chamber of Commerce, as well as senior executives from Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

The Forum was intended to be an informal exchange between political and business leaders in the region and CEU faculty and graduate students. It was started with an unusual request by prof. Maciej Kisilowski, IRI’s co-director who chaired the event, to substitute traditionally general ‘opening statements’ by more concrete, case-like accounts. Our invited business leaders were asked to choose one example of their (positive or negative) interaction with an administrative agency of any sort. Our distinguished political leaders were asked to consider sharing their present or past experience of leading a policy-making institution.

Throughout the discussion, participants were encouraged to treat the concept of Value-Creating Government as an intellectual anchor. Although everyday reality makes us often forget about it, governmental institutions – like business enterprises – should be expected to create public value. It means, in particular, continuously adding a valuable contribution to business environment and enhancing (rather than thwarting) a dynamic and sustainable socio-economic growth. Did the governmental institutions our participants were talking about succeeded in creating public value? Watch the videos linked below to find out.
